Club History

Formed in 1997, Ashton on Mersey FC now has nearly 400 members. Back in 1994, Tony Lowe set up an individual football skills coaching centre called Wellfield Soccer School and six months after founding the club, Tony recruited Ed Salmon to help out.

They had great success in terms of coaching the children and improving their skills but kept losing players to nearby clubs who had teams playing in local leagues.

In 1997, the decision was made to begin entering these leagues themselves and Ashton on Mersey FC was born. Whilst initial results weren’t fantastic, Tony & Ed persevered and, slowly but surely, AoM FC began to compete with more established local clubs.

Fast forward to the present day and thousands of children have passed through the club, moving up the age groups. We’ve helped around 40 of those develop to a stage where they were recruited by professional football clubs and a small number of them have even played for England at Youth level.

Above all, however, we want to ensure that local people have the opportunity to benefit from first class coaching in a safe environment.
